Requirements

Everything you need to know to get your Ohio driver's license — step by step, for both teens and adults.

Ages 15½ – 17

Teen Driver Requirements

Ohio's graduated licensing system for drivers under 18.

Complete Driver Education

Finish an Ohio-approved driver education course (minimum 24 hours). True Drive Academy's online course satisfies this requirement completely.

Obtain Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP)

At age 15½, visit an Ohio BMV location with your driver ed certificate, proof of identity, and Social Security number. Pass the written knowledge test.

Hold TIP for 6 Months

You must hold your TIP for at least 6 months before applying for a probationary license. Use this time to practice driving.

Log 50 Hours of Supervised Driving

Complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including a minimum of 10 hours at night. A licensed adult 21+ must be in the vehicle.

Complete Behind-the-Wheel Training

Complete 8 hours of professional in-car instruction with a licensed driving instructor. True Drive Academy provides this service.

Pass the Road Skills Test

At age 16, schedule and pass the Ohio BMV road skills test. You'll be tested on basic vehicle control, traffic laws, and safe driving practices.

Ages 18+

Adult Driver Requirements

Getting your first license as an adult in Ohio.

Driver Education (Recommended)

Adults 18+ are not required to complete driver education in Ohio, but it is strongly recommended. Our online course covers all Ohio traffic laws.

Obtain Temporary Instruction Permit

Visit an Ohio BMV location with proof of identity, Social Security number, and proof of Ohio residency. Pass the written knowledge test.

Hold TIP for 6 Months

Adults must also hold their TIP for 6 months before taking the road skills test.

Practice Driving

Practice driving with a licensed adult 21+ in the vehicle. Consider professional behind-the-wheel training to build confidence.

Pass the Road Skills Test

Schedule and pass the Ohio BMV road skills test to receive your probationary license.

Required Documents

  • Proof of identity (birth certificate, U.S. passport, or permanent resident card)
  • Social Security number (card, W-2, or pay stub)
  • Proof of Ohio residency (utility bill, bank statement, or school records)
  • Driver education completion certificate (for teens)
  • Parental consent form (for applicants under 18)

Probationary Restrictions

  • Under 17No driving between midnight and 6 AM unless accompanied by a licensed adult 21+
  • Under 17No more than 1 non-family passenger under age 18 in the vehicle
  • 17–18No driving between 1 AM and 5 AM unless accompanied by a licensed adult 21+
  • All probationaryNo use of any electronic device while driving (including hands-free)
  • All probationaryZero tolerance for alcohol — any detectable BAC results in license suspension
